Enlightened word processor?   Welcome to Ommwriter.   It’s still in Beta, and only for Mac users (10.5 above).   Thanks to the Rev. Rock-n-Roll for the heads-up.

Writing this morning to the Grateful Dead @ Boston Garden, May 7, 1977.   Great year, great soundboard recording!   Dancing in my chair, tapping out the beat on the belly of my St. Bernard snoring beneath my desk.   Life is good.

I followed a twitter link the other day to a live TED Symposium on education with a panel that included his H.H. the Dalai Lama.  While H.H. (not surprisingly) had some profound things to say, I was equally moved by the insights of his companion, Matthieu Ricard, a French biochemist turned Buddhist monk, who stole the show with his great sense of humor.

Recently crowned the Happiest Man in the World (though he offers his own disclaimer), Ricard is also featured on this week’s Speaking of Faith with Krista Tippett. This along with being quoted in the book I’m reading, led me to surmise that he’s someone worth my attention immediately.   The above clip is a trailer is for a recent documentary about his life and how he made the transition from biochemist to monk.

What I really dig about Ricard, especially for a guy who speaks English as a 2nd  (probably more like 3rd or 4th) language, is his ability to articulate the problems as well as the solutions to many of modern life’s complications into concise and tangible words (“interdependency is at the root of altruism and compassion” and “Happiness is a way of being that gives you the resources to deal with the up and downs of life.”).  I say when you get a sec, pour yourself a cup of tea and give his interview with Krista and/or his talk on the Habits of Happiness a listen.   He really seems to be one of the most enlightened figures of our era.

Was trying to explain to some students why cursing should be used sparingly, that gratuitious F-bombs are no substitute for real drama.   Thinking this [NSFW] link above might be the exception that proves the rule.  (link via @ryanoelke)
